LABOUR MINISTER OFFICIALLY OPENS 7TH UNZALARU QUADRENNIAL

21st November 2024…The Minister of Labour and Social Security, Brenda M. Tambatamba, officially opened the 7th University Of Zambia Lecturers And Researchers’ Union (UNZALARU) Quadrennial Congress at Mulungushi International Conference Center in Lusaka.
• The Minister commended the outgoing executive committee for its commitment and resilience during a challenging tenure, marked by COVID-19 complications and other national difficulties.
• Significant achievements were highlighted, such as the construction of a modern union office building and the negotiation of a cumulative 24% salary increment despite financial and pandemic-related challenges.
• The successful revision of the UNZA disciplinary and grievance procedure code was noted, achieved through collaborative efforts between the union, management, and the ministry, underscoring the importance of social dialogue in fostering harmonious work environments.
• Assurance was given that the government, in collaboration with unions, is working on a sustainable financing strategy to address outstanding debt, including NAPSA contributions.
• Members were encouraged to select credible leaders during the upcoming elections who would uphold the union’s reputation and advance its objectives.
• The Minister reaffirmed the government’s willingness to work closely with the new executive committee to further the union’s goals and strengthen its impact.
• The Minister officially opened the 7th Quadrennial Congress, emphasizing the union’s critical role in ensuring employee welfare and national development.
